Are you thinking about replacing your windows but finding yourself scratching your head and wondering how much time it might take?

Whether it’s for upgrading your home’s kerb appeal, saving some pennies on heating by improving energy efficiency, or adding another layer of security, understanding the timeline for window installation will help you make an informed decision when it comes to getting new windows fitted.

Birmingham Glass: Our standard timeline for fitting windows

At Birmingham Glass, we take great pride in delivering a quick and efficient service. Typically, our skilled team of window installers can finish fitting three windows in about four to six hours. This duration covers everything from site preparation and old window removal (if needed) to fitting the new ones securely and ensuring proper sealing and insulation.

It’s important to recognise that while the actual installation process might be quick, the overall project timeline can extend over several weeks. This covers various stages such as final surveys, manufacture, permits (sometimes required for certain buildings), and installation scheduling.

With Birmingham Glass, the longest you’ll have to wait is approximately four weeks for UPVC and six weeks for aluminium. This includes the time required for ordering customised windows and arranging the installation.

What factors can influence how long windows take to fit?

Whilst we can provide a standard timeline of how long it normally takes our team to fit windows, timeframes can vary due to varying factors. These factors include:

Window type and size

Obviously, the type and size of the windows you’re installing play a significant role in determining the duration of the fitting process! It’s a no brainer that larger or custom-sized windows generally require more time and effort to install compared to standard-sized ones.

Additionally, certain window styles, such as bay windows or picture windows, may involve more intricate installation techniques, which can extend the timeline. Of course, we will advise you of this during the initial stage of picking out your windows.

Material of the frames

The material of the window frames can also impact the installation timeline. Whether you choose aluminium or UPVC each material comes with its very own unique installation requirements.

For instance, aluminium frames will take longer to install due to having to gasket up on site, while UPVC frames are typically quicker to install due to their prefabricated finish.

Preparation work

Before the actual installation begins, there’s often a considerable amount of preparation work involved. This includes removing the old windows, cleaning the window openings, and making any necessary repairs to the surrounding areas. The condition of the existing window frames and the presence of any structural issues can influence the time needed for prep work.

Accessibility

The accessibility of the installation area also affects how long it takes to fit your windows. If the windows are located on upper floors or in hard-to-reach areas, additional time may be required to set up scaffolding or other access equipment. Similarly, obstacles such as landscaping features can slow down the installation process.

Communicating with us about any possible accessibility issues during the booking stage can help us to prepare and plan for accessibility concerns in order to still install your windows as quickly as possible.

We also have a whole blog on how to prepare for having your windows fitted, which includes a section on making sure the area is accessible. You can check that out here!

Weather conditions

Outdoor weather conditions can have a pretty big impact on the installation timeline. While we’re lucky to general avoid any of extremes of temperature here in the UK, excessive rain, snow or high winds can slow window fitting down.

If you want to find out a bit more about how the weather can impact window fittings, we have a blog for that too! You can read that here.

Permitting and regulations

Depending on your location and the type of building you’re installing windows in, for example, a listed building that requires specific windows you may need to comply with specific building codes and regulations.

Whilst this doesn’t directly impact how long it will take us to get your windows fitted on the day, if you think your building may fall within this category, it’s a good idea to factor it into your window installation timeline. We’ll also need to know beforehand so we can help to point you in the right direction when it comes to selecting your windows!
