Location and type: Traditional terraced property, residential.
Client request: The homeowner wanted to retain the charm and character of their original sliding sash windows while improving insulation. Additionally, they requested that the existing decorative leaded top lights be incorporated into the new windows.
Installation: A-rated double glazing with feature leaded lights and vertical sliding sash windows.
Challenges and solutions
As with many residential installations, this project required careful planning to work around the customer’s furniture and ensure minimal disruption. The goal was not only to refresh the tired property but also to improve its energy efficiency without compromising its traditional aesthetics.
To meet these needs, we liaised closely with the customer to schedule the installation at a convenient time. Our team worked efficiently to complete the project in just one day, ensuring a swift and smooth process.
A big challenge was preserving the leaded glass in the top of the bay window, which was an important original feature of the home. Our team carefully integrated this element into the new installation, maintaining the property’s heritage while providing the benefits of modern glazing.
As the sole trade on-site, we were responsible for the project from start to finish, ensuring the property was left in immaculate condition at the end of the day.
The process
The project was completed over a five-week period from initial consultation to final installation, with just one day required for on-site fitting. The new white sliding sash windows featured run-through sash horns and astragal bars to maintain the classic appearance of the home.
To ensure compliance with safety regulations, we fitted toughened glass throughout, as the windows were both moving and positioned below 800mm from the floor. This increased the home’s safety while still preserving its lovely traditional style.
The result
The homeowner was delighted with the final outcome. The new windows blended perfectly with the original aesthetic, making it difficult to distinguish them from the old ones – except for the improved energy efficiency!
